Σαλέπι: Ένα ρόφημα που εξαφανίζεται - Salepi: a disappearing beverage

Salepi. Beverage that was brought over from the East. Made from Orchid root flour, but also from some other plants. It is uncertain how it was invented. Ancient Greek physicians had referred to therapeutic properties of orchid roots. Some people experimented and found that they liked the beverage. They added sugar or honey and spices and used to drink it warm during cold winter days. They found it warming, therapeutic and emollient of the throat. It came to Greece through the Greek refugees of Constantinople. There were many Salepi peddlers during the last century, who were carrying the Salepi outfit by hand or on their shoulders; today a handful remain and they use more comfortable means of transport.
